| Sakamoto Honored by UNEP's Echo Festival | ||

Ryuichi Sakamoto was honored with the Echo Award for "The Most Innovative Musician and Musical Tour 2009" at the United Nations Environment Programme's Echo Festival in conjunction with World Environment Day at the Royal Park in Brussels. "Mr. Sakamoto's constant push towards sustainability is inspiring. The inspiration of nature in his music as well as his persistence in discovering new ways to release music and touring his music through sustainable and ecologically sound ways is remarkable. Sakamoto has in total purchased 3 forests in Japan, has created a tour that leaves 0 carbon footprint, and continues to find new ways of being more green!The Echo Award will celebrate his dedication and acknowledge Mr. Sakamoto as an environmental and sustainable leader, using creativity as a means to showcase the possibility of being ecologically sound through action!" Also honored were Theo Jansen, who received the Echo Art Award, and Gaston Lagaffe, who launched a new book entitled "L'ecologie selon Lagaffe." | ||

| Sakamoto to Join Bang on a Can Marathon | ||

Ryuichi Sakamoto will join Bang on a Can on Sunday, May 31, as Bang on a Can presents its annual Bang on a Can Marathon, held for the fourth year at World Financial Center Winter Garden and co-presented by the River To River Festival and arts>World Financial Center. Founded in 1987, the Marathon is still FREE and this year brings together more than 30 astounding performers and composers from throughout the world, performing in numerous genres and experimental styles. The Bang on a Can Marathon opens the 2009 River To River Festival, the city¡Çs largest FREE summer arts extravaganza. At least six new works will be premiered on May 31. In the Bang on a Can tradition of presenting the unexpected, this Marathon will include a piece written for nine saxophones, another for a ten-piece steel pan band, one for pipa and tabla with string quartet, and even a new composition for five coffee grinders (Braun KSM2s, to be exact), plus much more. Among the many highlights, this year's marathon will feature: Bang on a Can All-Stars performing world premieres of brand new collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto and another with world-renowned guitarist Bill Frisell; a special appearance by the groundbreaking post-rock band Tortoise; and much more.
