eeing sound, hearing time celebrates the legacy of composer, producer, and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto (Japanese, 1952–2023). Sakamoto is renowned for his award-winning film scores, wide-ranging collaborations, and exploratory spirit. His 2017 album, async, which he described as ‘some of the most personal music I have ever created’, forms the core of async–immersion (2023), a large-scale installation created in collaboration with artist Shiro Takatani (Japanese, born 1963). The work is part of a series of what they call ‘installation music’, in which the album is paired with a three-dimensional representation of the music in a gallery space. Shown as a site-specific installation in The Studio, the work features Takatani’s visual compositions of Sakamoto’s instruments, plants, books, and other objects in his studio, shown on a large LED screen. The images emerge from either side of the screen and dissolve, one pixel at a time, into abstract horizontal lines before regaining their original form. Takatani’s visual interventions are not synchronised with the sound but evolve continuously, creating a parallel time axis within the artwork. The music from async plays through multiple channels in a surround sound system via high-precision speakers, enveloping visitors in an immersive sonic experience.
The exhibition also features two moving image works created by artist Carsten Nicolai (German, born 1965) in 2024, ENDO EXO and PHOSPHENES, presented in the Grand Stair. Each piece is paired with music from Sakamoto’s final album, 12 (2023). A selection of Sakamoto-related film programmes will be screened at M+ Cinema throughout the exhibition period.

Recollection, Time, and Sound…
What did Ryuichi Sakamoto encounter at Expo '70 in Osaka? Here are the unknown connections between Sakamoto and the city.
This will be the first major exhibition of Ryuichi Sakamoto to be held in Osaka.
In 1970, at the age of 18, Sakamoto encountered a vast array of music and art at Expo '70 in Osaka, held under the theme "Progress and Harmony for Mankind." From the national pavilions echoed avant-garde electronic sounds rooted in atonality—Tōru Takemitsu's Crossing and Seasons, Yuji Takahashi's Egan (an early inspiration for Sakamoto), and Jōji Yuasa's Music for Space Projection. At the West German Pavilion, Karlheinz Stockhausen performed "Spiral" daily in a spherical auditorium. The Pepsi Pavilion presented the world premiere of Fujiko Nakaya's fog sculptures, while Iannis Xenakis created Hibiki-Hana-Ma for the Steel Pavilion, which also featured sonic sculptures by François Baschet.
These experiences would leave a lasting imprint on Sakamoto—becoming a conceptual spine for his lifelong exploration of sound. The emerging world of synthesizer-based electronic music also profoundly shaped his vision. Beginning in 2016, Sakamoto was able to perform and record with the original Baschet sound sculptures from Expo '70, weaving their unique timbres into his own compositions. These experiments culminated in his 2017 album "async", and echoed once more in his final stage work, TIME.
Expo 2025 Osaka and "sakamotocommon"
In 2025, as the World Expo returns to Osaka, we ask: might we pass on the inspiration that once stirred the young Sakamoto, to a new generation of creators, through the platform of sakamotocommon? With this in mind, we begin our project from "VS.," a newly opened space in Umeda, Osaka. The exhibition will feature the Baschet sound sculptures originally shown at Expo '70, along with newly created instruments crafted by the Baschet Restoration Team at Tokyo University of the Arts and Marti Ruiz—made especially for Sakamoto. In addition, using performance data from Sakamoto himself, audiences will be able to experience his beloved grand piano playing once more—offering a quiet echo of the hands that once shaped its sound.

sakamotocommon
sakamotocommon was launched to share the tangible and intangible assets of Ryuichi Sakamoto. The initiative strives to serve as a common ground where future creators can connect and continue to build on the work that Sakamoto sent into motion.
During his lifetime, Sakamoto often said that the creative process was what intrigued him, even more than finished product itself. In this spirit, we believe that Sakamoto’s story is not something meant to be merely locked away under museum glass, but rather, part of a living process that continues to grow and offer fertile ground for cultivation long after his death.
Join sakamotocommon in exploring the next chapter in this evolving process, open to all.

Piano Score "Solitude"
by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Ryuichi Sakamoto’s official score store has released a new piano score "Solitude" today. Composed for the 2005 film Tony Takitani (directed by Jun Ichikawa) and based on the short story by Haruki Murakami, "Solitude" is one of Ryuichi Sakamoto's well-appreciated pieces. It was featured in his final solo piano performance in the 2024 concert film Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, and was performed many times in his earlier concerts.
Though the piece may sound simple with its repetitive phrases, achieving clear and consistent resonance for each note is quite challenging. This became even more difficult for Sakamoto during the recording of Opus as his stamina and muscle strength had declined.
In celebration of the long-awaited first analog release of the Tony Takitani original soundtrack (available on September 25, 2024), the piano score is now available for the first time on the official score site. This is the version that Sakamoto himself carefully refined for his performance in Opus.

eeing sound, hearing time celebrates the legacy of composer, producer, and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto (Japanese, 1952–2023).
A selection of Sakamoto-related film programmes will be screened at M+ Cinema throughout the exhibition period.

https://www.mplus.org.hk/tc/exhibitions/ryuichi-sakamoto-seeing-sound-hearing-time

Ryuichi Sakamoto + Daito Manabe
This collaborative work by Sakamoto and Manabe senses and visualizes ‘electromagnetic waves,’ which are normally imperceptible to humans. While ‘electromagnetic waves’ are an essential part of modern infrastructure, they often go unnoticed in daily life.
The work will now be presented in the underground space of Ginza Sony Park. It will sense the electromagnetic waves traversing Ginza and display them in a new form using Sony's high-definition LED display, Crystal LED.
